How to Use & Cook Your Egusi Mix (Serves 3-4)
- 1 packet MC Breeze Food Egusi Mix.
- 1 bottle of MC Breeze Food mini Palm Oil.
- 3-4 cups (700-950ml) water or meat/fish stock.
- Your choice of protein (beef, chicken, fish, goat meat, etc.) – pre-cooked and seasoned
- Salt to taste
Cooking Instructions:
- Prepare your Proteins. If not already done, cook and season your chosen protein until tender. Set aside the protein and reserve the stock.
- In a bowl, gradually add about 1 cup of water or stock to the entire packet of MC Breeze Food Egusi Mix, stirring until a smooth, thick paste is formed. This helps prevent lumps.
- Heat 1 bottle of MC Breeze Food mini Palm Oil, in a pot over medium heat about 1-2 minutes.
- Add the Egusi Paste carefully into the already hot palm oil. Do not stir immediately. Allow the paste to simmer gently for about 3-5 minutes. This helps the Egusi "fry" and prevents the soup from becoming watery.
- Gently stir the Egusi, breaking it apart. Add your cooked protein and the remaining stock/water adjusting for desired consistency. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt if needed.
- Your delicious Egusi Soup is ready! Serve hot with your favorite swallow (Pounded Yam, Eba, Fufu, Amala) or rice.
Product FAQs
Q: What is Egusi?
A: Egusi refers to the fat- and protein-rich seeds of certain cucurbitaceous plants (like squash, melon, gourd). They are ground and used as a primary ingredient in West African cuisine, most notably in Egusi Soup, a savory and hearty stew.
Q: Is MC Breeze Food Egusi Mix spicy?
A: Our Egusi Mix itself is not inherently spicy. We provide a neutral base so you can customize the spice level to your preference by adding fresh or blended peppers during cooking.
Q: Does this mix contain any artificial preservatives or colors?
A: No, MC Breeze Food Egusi Mix is made with natural ingredients and contains no artificial preservatives or colors.
Q: Can I make Egusi Soup vegetarian/vegan with this mix?
A: Absolutely! Our Egusi Mix is naturally vegetarian/vegan. Simply use vegetable stock or water, and incorporate plant-based proteins like mushrooms, tofu, or extra vegetables instead of meat.
Q: How should I store the Egusi Mix?
A: Store your MC Breeze Food Egusi Mix in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, seal tightly or transfer to an airtight container to maintain freshness.
Q: What is the shelf life of the product?
A: When stored correctly, it has a long shelf life.
Q: What are the "tiny bits of leaves" I see in the mix?
A: Those tiny leaves are a special addition of traditional African greens, carefully selected to enhance the authentic flavor profile of your Egusi Soup. They are a natural part of the mix and contribute to its delicious taste.
